The 2nd Annual SAASC Mini Conference at the California State Archives was another grand success! Approximately 10-15 students from SJSU iSchool and the Sac State Public History Masters program gathered on June 18th to hear Nancy Lenoil, CA State Archivist, present the ins and outs of archival management and grant writing; and Linda Johnson, CSA Education and Outreach Coordinator, present about archival outreach.
Nancy also led the group on a generous behind-the-scenes tour of the State Archives. Did you know that on January 5, 1850 (eight months before the state was officially formed on September 9, 1850) the first California law created the State Archives? According to this law, the Secretary of State was held responsible for collecting, keeping, and preserving the records of the government. On our tour, we saw the special telescoping boxes that were created to hold the archives' oversized scrolls, the preservation room, the Constitution Wall, and even 19th century mug shots (at the time it was required to take a photo of the same person with and without a hat!). Did you miss it? Check out our photos and be sure to keep an eye out for next year's SAASC Mini Conference! You can also see the State Archives at the 2016 Sacramento Archives Crawl on October 8. Mark your calendars!

As the 2016-2017 Chair of SAASC, I endeavor to increase membership; continue the same great event programming for which SAASC is recognized; build on Archeota, the publication which is the voice of the iSchool's student archivists; and strengthen the relationship between SAASC and SAA national, as well as local archivist associations. By serving as the SAASC Secretary over the course of the 2015-2016 academic year, I have gained experience in our organization; and I am confident that I will excel in the responsibilities of the Chair. Tiana Trutna, Vice-Chair I am excited for another year as the Vice-Chair of SAASC. I had a tremendous time in this position for the 2015-2016 school year, and look forward to the opportunity of building further connections and relationships with iSchool peers, along with archival professionals. Amanda Mellinger, Secretary I have been a member in SAASC since I started the iSchool program in the Fall of 2014. This past academic year, I also participated on the Web Team. I look forward to continuing my involvement in the form of Secretary where I hope to increase student involvement and help organize more student events. My personal goals for the group are to build upon this past year's successful events, create more opportunities for students to get involved, and establish a ScholarWorks event archive page like the other student groups in the iSchool. The International Council on Archives has declared June 9th International Archives Day! During this day, archives around the world will hold events to celebrate and promote the archival profession. This is your chance to connect with colleagues, donors, researchers, volunteers, and the public! Plan to participate by holding or attending an event... or simply make people aware of archives.
The theme for this year's celebration is "Archives, Harmony and Friendship", which is also the theme of the 2016 ICA Congress in Seoul, South Korea. Though June 9th is the official International Archives Day, the celebration will continue up until the congress in September. Consider working on a project to promote archives this summer! The 2nd Joint Student Chapter Meeting & Mini-Conference for the Society of American Archivists will take place on June 18, 2016 at the California State Archives!
Alumni and current students of the Sac State and SJSU student chapters are welcome! There will be an extended tour of the CSA, as well as two presentations on archives management and outreach. Please see the attachment for details on the event. RSVP here by June 15 to attend. |
