October is Archives Month! Help build awareness of archives and take this opportunity to learn about the archival profession with SAASC!
How can you get involved? Participate in some of the many archives events taking place in October. Find an event near you or join us for the following events: October 5 - Archeota Call for Content Volume 2, Issue 2 of Archeota, SAASC's digital publication, will come out this December. Have something to say about archives? We want to hear it! Submit your ideas starting October 5th! October 5 - #AskAnArchivist Day Have a burning question that only an archivist can answer? Tweet your question using the hashtag #AskAnArchivist and direct it towards your favorite archives (ex. @ALA_Archives). Questions can range from the mundane to the philosophical. Be creative! And keep an eye on SAASC's Twitter account on October 5th! Learn more here. October 8 - Sacramento Archives Crawl From 10am-4pm, four prestigious archives in Sacramento will be open to the public. This free, annual event promises to be rewarding. Though SAASC does not have an official presence, please contact us if you would like to meet up! More information here. October 18 - Diversity and Cultural Competency in the Archives: SAASC online event Join us at 6:30pm PT for a discussion on diversity and cultural competency in the archives. Login here! October 19 - Tour the SJSU Archives Don't miss this amazing in-person tour of the SJSU Archives! This event is a collaboration of SAASC with Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society. Get a different perspective from these history students and a behind-the-scenes peek at the SJSU Archives. More information coming soon. October 22 - Santa Clara Valley Archives Crawl Eleven different archives, museums, and special collections are participating in this first annual Santa Clara Valley crawl! Though SAASC does not have an official presence, please contact us if you would like to meet up! More information here. The 11th Annual Archives Bazaar-- brought to you by L.A. as Subject & the USC Libraries-- is looking for volunteers. The annual event, held onSaturday, October 15, 2016, will feature educational programming, film screenings, author panels, and exhibits of local historical and archive collections from universities, public libraries, community-based organizations, artists, and private collectors. This opportunity is perfect for those interested in the fields of library science, archives, history, and the social sciences. Volunteers will be asked to staff exhibitor booths during breaks, provide general information to the visitors, assist with the special presentation events, and act as liaison between the exhibitors and main Archives Bazaar coordinators. FREE PARKING and LIGHT REFRESHMENTS will be included for all volunteers. Requirements: Interest in Los Angeles history and documentation -- Be able to commit 3 hours on the day of the event To volunteer, visit http://laassubject.org/archives-bazaar and click on the "Volunteer Registration for" link. SAASC is looking for people to work on the following committees (*Note: You must be a member of SAA to participate): Archeota Managing Editor-in-Training Catherine Folnovic, our amazing Archeota Managing Editor since Spring 2015, is graduating soon. We are looking for someone to join the Archeota editorial team and train to become the next Managing Editor. All are welcome to apply, but we are hopefully looking for someone who has at least a year left at the iSchool. If you are a new student, don't hesitate to step forward! Access to the most recent version of Microsoft Office's Publisher is preferred. Please see go here for more information and to let us know you're interested! Events Team Join our Events Team and help plan and prepare for a stellar lineup of events. We are especially looking for people who would assist with creating graphics, flyers, and presentations (PowerPoint or Prezi). Web Team Join this crucial team, which keeps SAASC connected with students. We are looking for people interested in working on Twitter, the blog, ScholarWorks, and a calendar of archives-related events. Special Projects The iSchool has a wonderful webpage set up to help students learn about prospective working environments for different library settings called:Career Environments. So far, they have microsites set up for Academic, Public, and Special Libraries. Seems like there should be one for archives too, right?! Help us set this up!
