Welcome back to the Fall 2016 semester! The SJSU Society of American Archivists Student Chapter wants to welcome returning and new students to the fall semester. The new Executive Team is excited for the upcoming year to connect with new members and host some great events. Come back and visit the website for details on how to connect with the group, read interesting blog posts, and get information on Upcoming Events.
The first event hosted every year is our Annual Members Meeting. This is a chance for new and returning students to get to know the Executive Committee, learn about ways to get involved, and hear more about planned events for the semester. The meeting is held via the Blackboard Collaborate link found below.
When: Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 6pm PST

We look forward to welcoming you all to SAASC!
The 2016 SAA Annual Meeting (#saa16) was held in Atlanta, Georgia this year from July 31 - August 6. Your devoted SAASC officers attended from August 4-6, arriving just in time to attend the Plenary session on Thursday morning ("Getting Our House in Order: Moving from Diversity to Inclusion" by Chris Taylor, the Director of Inclusion and Community Engagement at the Minnesota Historical Society). To give you just a taste, the SAA schedule quotes Chris as saying: “Inclusion is leveraging the benefits of diversity to improve our work through creativity, innovation, and inclusive working environments."
Next, there were a plethora of education sessions, Mentor meetings, and even a Navigator meeting. A sampling of the sessions attended by your officers include: Deconstructing Whiteness in Archives: An Opportunity for Self-Reflection (a frank discussion of race and culture in archives); the Oral History Section Meeting (where Sam Robson of the Atlanta-based U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) presented the oral history work he has been doing with Ebola responders); DWG, RVT, BIM: A New Kind of Alphabet Soup, with a Lot More Heartburn! (a panel discussion of architectural archives responding to new kinds of electronic files and software); I Think You're Projecting: Improving Understanding of Moving Image Archives Users (a panel discussion about the variety of users and uses for film archives); and Recipes from Culinary Collections: Creative (and Tasty!) Approaches to Outreach! (Yes, there were food samples. Have you ever tried "hardtack"?)
We also got a chance to attend the SJSU iSchool reception and meet Dr. Pat Franks and our SAASC faculty advisor, Lori Lindberg. What a treat to meet these two pillars of the iSchool archives program in person! Lori also presented a professional poster: Archives in the News! An Examination of Mainstream Media Coverage of Archives!
Last, but not least, your executive committee was so ambitious as to present our own student poster about the comings and goings of the illustrious SJSU SAASC. Click here to see the poster and our smiling faces!
We want to thank Dr. Hirsh and the iSchool for their generous support that enabled us to attend this conference.
